What stories can a place name tell us?

The visible features of the Lule Sami region is composed of forest areas and river valleys in the east, high mountains in the world heritage Laponia and the Norwegian fjord landscape in the west.

You can find valuable information in the designation and names of mountains, lakes and other places. The names assist us with knowledge about the people who lived here and the language they spoke. They describe the scenery and terrain. They can indicate places with particular cultural meaning and describe historical events. Place names are therefore a significant source of knowledge. Through the interaction between a place, people and stories, a creative act takes place that expresses itself in a name.

In the app you will find ”points of interest”, which are pins signifying towns, places and routes. There you can find more information about the meaning of the place name and read about history and culture. The app is also available in offline-mode.

The app’s intention is to increase knowledge of the Sami cultural landscape and the significance of the many Lule Sami place names. The project is an interregional collaboration project between Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, Árran Lule Sami Center in Tysfjord and Luleå University of technology.
